The Barany Society (a small international society devoted to vertigo) met in Kyoto, Japan this year (in 2008). The timing of the meeting -- end of March to early April, 2008 was perfect because the Cherry blossoms were in full bloom. There are a LOT of cherry blossoms in Japan -- the train tracks are planted with the trees - - Japanese people really like cherry blossoms !
Kyoto, the old capital of Japan, is loaded with beautiful sights, friendly people, Buddhist temples and curious Shinto shrines. The public transportation in Japan is fantastic too. I found it easier to get around in Japan than in Italy. The big drawback to staying in Japan is that everything costs about twice as much as it does in the US. I was shocked when a rather pedestrian breakfast at the hotel I was staying at cost $35. I looked at the electronics in Tokyo and had to laugh -- we have far better deals in the US. This is not a good place to buy anything you can buy in the US or on the internet! Also, if you plan to travel to Kyoto during the cherry blossom season, make your hotel reservations FAR in advance.
Here are a few pictures from the trip --
|This cherry tree was photographed in Gian, which is a district in Kyoto.|

|Osaka Castle (Ok, this is not in Kyoto). Osaka castle (like many old buildings associated with the old imperial government in Japan as well as rather curiously, many of the buildings within which Frank Lloyd Wright's wives resided -- is there a parallel here ?) was burnt to the ground. This is a reconstruction.|
