It's documentation is "by example". Thats very bad.
Plot.ly can do some awesome stuff, but figuring how to do it is very difficult, because there is no manual. Rather there is a disorganized set of documents, most of which are rather cryptic, as well as a scattered collection of examples of various pieces of plotly code, from which we suppose the user is supposed to figure out how to do things. Figuring out how to do the rather nice plots above, took about 4 hours. This is better than google charts, which just didn't work, but a little organization would go a long way here.
Practically, I would far rather have a commercial graphics package, with a decent printed user manual.
